Existential mystery drama, sometimes labeled an early giallo, about a troubled writer (Baldwin), who returns to a lakeside community to write a novel, but secretly he wishes to see a woman again. When he learns that she has killed herself, he does some research and finds himself in the middle of a family scandal. Moody, almost dream-like psycho drama with a haunting score (by Renzo Rossellini) unfolds beautifully, with voice-over narration a particular treat. Rare but a must-see. Script by the co-directors, the composer, and Giulio Questi, based on the novel by Giovanni Comisso. English titles: THE LADY OF THE LAKE, THE POSSESSED.
